Two Rockets Qualify for Match Play at 112th WWGA at Monroe Golf & Country Club
TOLEDO, OH - Piyathida Chaiyapan (Bangkok, Thailand) and Allison Schultz (Cincinnati, OH) qualified for the championship flight on Tuesday at the 112th Women's Western Golf Association National Amateur Championship. Chaiyapan and Schultz each shot 10-over par 154 and will begin match play on Wednesday morning at Monroe (MI) Golf & Country Club.
Also competing for Toledo in the event are sophomore Megan Carroll (Cleves, OH), junior Kate Hoops (Lima, OH) and sophomore Lauren Stephens (Dublin, OH). Stephens qualified for the second flight at 164, while Carroll and Hoops are in the third flight with totals of 166 and 168, respectively.
A 2012 second-team All-MAC honoree, Chaiyapan concluded her Rocket career in the spring by tying for first place at the Mid-American Conference Championship. She will face Tezira Abe (Arlington, TX) at 8:45 a.m. today. Abe, a freshman from the University of Texas, shot the best round of the day on Tuesday with three-under 69.
Schultz, who will be entering her senior year at UT in the fall, takes on Sarah Ababa (Davado, Phillipines at 9:15 a.m. today.
The remaining Rockets will compete in match play this afternoon. Stephens matches up with Taylor Clark (Shelby Township, MI) at 12:00 p.m., Hoops faces Natalie Schmett (Evansville, IN) at 1:00 p.m. and Carroll competes against Lelesse Mocio (Plano, TX) at 1:37 p.m.
Aria Jutanugarn led all qualifiers by posting a three-under 141 (66-75). A native of Thailand, Jutanugarn was last year's champion at the United States Golf Association's (USGA) Girls' Junior Championship and was the low Amateur in this year's LPGA Kraft Nabisco Championship. She is currently ranked third in Golfweek's Amateur Rankings. Her sister, Moriya, currently ranked first by Golfweek, tied for fourth place with a two-day total of 145.
