TOLEDO, OH - The University of Toledo will play the University of Cincinnati in a home-and-home football series beginning with a game at the Glass Bowl next fall, UT Athletic Director Mike O'Brien announced today. The Rockets will host the Bearcats on Oct. 20, 2012 and travel to Nippert Stadium on Sept. 13, 2014.
"We are very pleased to be adding the University of Cincinnati to our 2012 home football schedule and look forward to an exciting series with the Bearcats," said O'Brien.
"I'm excited that we are adding Cincinnati to our 2012 schedule," added head coach Matt Campbell. "I have a lot of respect for Coach Butch Jones and the Cincinnati program. This will be another challenging series that I'm sure our players and fans will look forward to."
The two schools have met six times before, with Cincinnati holding a 4-2 advantage in the series. The last meeting was at the 2001 Motor City Bowl, with Toledo taking a 23-16 victory.
Cincinnati had a 10-3 record this past season, including a 31-24 victory over Vanderbilt in the Liberty Bowl. The Bearcats were Big East co-champions and finished the season ranked No. 21 in the USA Today coaches poll. As recently as 2009, the Bearcats were 12-1 and rose to No. 4 in the country before losing to No. 5 Florida in the Sugar Bowl.
The Rockets were 9-4, 7-1 in Mid-American Conference play, and defeated Air Force, 42-41, in the Military Bowl.
The Cincinnati game completes Toledo's 2012 schedule. The Rockets' other non-conference games include a home game vs. Coastal Carolina on Sept. 22, as well as visits to Arizona on Sept. 1 and Wyoming on Sept. 8. Toledo's eight conference games include home contests against Bowling Green, Akron, Central Michigan and Ball State, and road games at Buffalo, Eastern Michigan, Northern Illinois and Western Michigan. Dates for the league games will be announced at a later date.
Toledo's series with Cincinnati is the latest addition to a challenging and exciting Rocket non-conference home schedule in upcoming years. In future years Navy (2013), Missouri (2014), Miami-FL (2015) and Iowa State (2015) will all visit the Glass Bowl. In recent years, the Rockets have hosted schools such as Boise State, Arizona, Colorado, Purdue, Kansas, Iowa State, Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Navy, Syracuse and Indiana.
