CONWAY, SC - Toledo allowed 13 runs in the first four innings and suffered a 14-4 loss to nationally ranked Coastal Carolina on Friday in the opening game of the Caravelle Resort Invitational at Watson Stadium. With the setback, the Rockets fall to 2-2 on the season.
The eighth-ranked Chanticleers (8-1) plated two runs each in the first, second and fourth frames, as well as seven in the third to race out to a double-digit lead.
The Rockets tried their best to mount a comeback and scored two runs each in the sixth and the ninth innings, but it was not enough to take down their nationally ranked opponent. Senior Tim Krofcheck was credited with an RBI in both frames, while junior Chris Dudics had a run-scoring hit in their final at-bat.
Dudics (3-for-5, RS, RBI) paced the Midnight Blue & Gold with three hits. The 2009 MAC All-Tournament Team honoree led UT with a squad-high 22 multi-hit efforts last spring. Junior Jason Edwards (2-for-4) and Krofcheck (2-for-4, RS, 2 RBI) also collected more than one hit in the weekend-opening game.
UT sophomore LHP Kyle Shaw (0-1) was shouldered with the loss, yielding eight runs (seven earned) on four hits with one strikeout in 2.1 innings.
The home team finished with 11 hits against five Toledo pitchers and was aided in their efforts with 11 walks to run their win streak to six straight. Rich Witten fueled the Chanticleers' attack with three hits, three runs scored and four RBI.
Anthony Meo (2-0) was credited with the victory, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with three punchouts in 6.0 frames.
Toledo returns to action tomorrow when it squares off with Albany. The first pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
