Tanika Mays scored her 1,000-career point in Toledo's 72-62 victory over. Cleveland State on Sunday.

TOLEDO, OH - Toledo (1-1) utilized a 22-8 run midway through the second half and claimed its first win of the season, defeating Cleveland State, 72-62, on Sunday. The non-conference contest was played before 2,419 fans at Savage Arena.

"Cleveland State tried to pack it in defensively to counter our height, but I thought our kids did a good job of adjusting and our spacing was so much better in the second half," Toledo Head Coach Tricia Cullop said. "We had more time to get off shots as a result of that and our shooting percentage went up."

Senior Allie Clifton led four Rockets in double figures with 22 points, followed by sophomore Naama Shafir (15 pts.), junior Jessica Williams (12 pts.) and senior Tanika Mays (12 pts.). Mays also topped the 1,000-point barrier in the 10-point victory.

"Getting to 1,000 career points is a great milestone in my career," said Mays, who also finished with six rebounds, game-high five assists and two steals. "I think I have worked hard on my game and this is my reward. At the same time, though, I have to thank my teammates, because I couldn't do it alone."

The Rockets shot 42.6 percent (26-of-61) the field, including an impressive 41.7 percent (10-of-24) from three-point land, and 83.3 percent (10-of-12) from the free-throw line to rebound from Friday's season-opening loss to Northwestern.

Trailing 33-32 at the 13:52 mark of the second half, UT sophomore Courtney Ingersoll hit a triple to start the game-changing run. Moments later, Shafir knocked down back-to-back treys, before Ingersoll finished off the run with another three-point field goal to establish a 15-point bulge, 54-39, at 7:54. A season ago, the most triples UT hit in a single game was nine.

"I was very proud of our team for being able to adapt quickly to something that was a little different from what I normally ask them to do," Cullop said. "We had a lot of different people step up tonight and be threats. It was all good to see that."

In the early going, the Midnight Blue & Gold found some success inside and three-consecutive layups from Shafir, Clifton and Mays gave them a 10-4 lead at 11:47.

The Rockets maintained a comfortable cushion as the opening half wore on and back-to-back triples from Williams and Clifton made the score 18-11 with 7:10 remaining. UT's effort was aided by CSU's poor shooting, as the visitors misfired on 15 of their initial 20 field goal attempts.

Unfortunately for UT, they were not able to further extend its lead and settled for a 23-19 advantage into the intermission. Toledo shot 33.3 percent (10-of-33) from the field in the opening 20 minutes, compared to Cleveland State at 24.1 percent (7-of-29).

"I thought we were in a chicken fight in that first half," Cullop said. "We just couldn't find a way to pull away."

Toledo's Williams and Clifton hit a pair of treys to begin the second period to make the score 30-23 at 17:45.

The Vikings quickly responded with a 10-2 run over the next four minutes to take their only lead of the game, 33-32, before the Rockets' game-changing run. CSU's burst was spearheaded by back-to-back triples from Jessica Roque and Kailey Klein.

"I thought our energy level in the second half was a lot better than the first, and I thought that helped us," Mays said.

Klein led the Vikings with 19 points and Roque had 14 in a losing effort.

The Rockets return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 18 when they travel to Rochester, MI to battle Oakland. Tip-off will be at 6:30 p.m. in the Athletics Center O'Rena.
