TOLEDO, OH - Freshman RHP Cody Umbright and senior RHP Rob Moffat combined to toss a no-hitter, as the Blue team registered a 12-1 win on Tuesday in the second game of the annual Blue-Gold Series at Scott Park.
Umbright was dominant in the start, allowing one unearned run with four punchouts over three frames, before giving way to Moffat, who was equally as effective with a pair of strikeouts over the final three innings.
With the two right-handed pitchers clicking on all cylinders on the hill, the middle of the Blue squad's lineup did a majority of the damage at the plate. The number four, five and six hitters, junior Jared Hoying (2-for-3, 3 R, 2 RBI), junior Dan Sherwood (1-for-2, R, 4 RBI) and sophomore Jeff Cola (3-for-3, R, 2 RBI) combined for six hits, six runs scored and eight RBI in the double-digit triumph. The big hit was a grand slam off the bat of Sherwood in the sixth. In all, the Blue team scored three runs in the first, one each in the third and fourth and seven insurance tallies in the sixth.
For the Gold team, sophomore RHP Lincoln Rassi was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs on five hits with four strikeouts over three innings.
The third and final contest of the three-game series will take place today, Wednesday, Oct. 14 at Scott Park. The first pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m. The Blue squad will look to complete the sweep behind the arm of freshman RHP Jared Locke, while the Gold squad is slated to start freshman RHP Michael Hamann.
