OXFORD, OH - The three-time Mid-American Conference tourney champions held a 17-9 edge in shots, but the Rockets dropped a 1-0 decision at Miami on the road for the team's first league defeat of the season.
"Overall it was a well-played match," Toledo Head Coach Brad Evans. "I thought both teams played good enough to win."
Toledo (5-4-2, 1-1-1 MAC) had two shots on goal in the opening seven minutes of the match but could not convert. Later in the half, sophomore Kristen Lynn (Strongsville, OH) had a pair of shot attempts turned away by RedHawk netminder Krista Pace and the teams went into the break scoreless.
Miami (5-4-1, 1-1-1) had a pair of shot attempts misfire in the opening minutes of the second half, but finally converted at the 57:02 mark as Stephanie Laser found the back of the net off of a feed from Sara Lund. The Rockets had two more attempts near the end of regulation, but a shot by freshman Rachel Kravitz was turned away and senior Molly Cornwell sent a shot high just 37 seconds before the final whistle.
"Lasor had a great shot and put Miami's goal on the board, while we had our chances but we just didn't finish," Evans said.
Cornwell, Kravitz and Lynn each had two shots on goal to pace the Rockets, who also held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Vicki Traven (St. Charles, IL) made three saves in the loss.
The Rockets wrap up a five-match roadtrip on Sunday, Oct. 4 at Ball State. The opening whistle from the Ball State Soccer Field is slated for 1:00 p.m. Toledo plays its first MAC home match next Friday, Oct. 9 against Akron at Scott Park at 4:00 p.m.
"We must now push forward to look for a good result on Sunday against Ball State," Evans said.
