Toledo Loses Heartbreaker at No. 24 Coastal Carolina in Extra Innings, 9-8
CONWAY, SC - No. 24 Coastal Carolina (10-1) used a 10th-inning run-scoring single from Tommy Baldridge to defeat Toledo, 9-8, in game one of the Springmaid Beach Resort Tournament presented by Myrtle Beach Hyundai Isuzu. With the loss, the Rockets fall to 3-5 on the season.
After CCU’s Nick McCully retired the Rockets in order in the 10th, Chance Gilmore tripled down the right field line. Rocket junior reliever Jeff Cinadr then intentionally walked the next two batters, setting up Baldridge’s Texas leaguer to left field, plating the winning run.
The Chanticleers would strike first in the first. David Sappelt led off the game with a single off UT senior Kyle Rawlings. It looked as if Sappelt would be picked off at first, but he beat the throw to second on the rundown. Sappelt would score on a double from Adam Rice.
Toledo quickly fought back scored six unanswered runs, in the next four innings. In the second, junior Jake Oester reached second on a dropped fly from Rice. With runners on second and third and two out, senior Nate McKeon singled to bring both runners home. In the fourth, sophomore Aaron Dudley scored on a double play, and sophomore Ryan Satterlee brought in classmate Josh Johnson with a single to left center. Oester then plated senior Drew Hoisington, who doubled with one out, on a single to right in the fifth. Oester would score on a Johnson single to center to establish a five-run cushion.
CCU’s Jose Iglesias helped narrow UT’s lead with a bases clearing double to right center in the fifth. The home team would take the lead in the seventh. Scott Woodward walked to open the frame and went to second on a single. Dock Doyle moved both runners up on a sacrifice bunt. Toledo pulled the starter Rawlings for classmate Mike Ellis, who gave up a two-run double to Anderson. Baldridge then brought in Anderson with a single to right.
Toledo came storming right back with a run in the eighth, as McKeon belted his second home run of the season. Coastal answered, though, on an Anderson RBI single.
McCully came out in the ninth and had runners on first and second and two outs. UT senior co-captain Jake Swint hit a line drive to right field that Woodward just missed catching, scoring Oester to tie the game and send it into extra frames.
The loss went to Cinadr (0-1), who gave up a run and three hits in 1.1 innings. Rawlings struck out four and allowed six runs and eight hits in 6.1 innings.
Toledo was led by Johnson, who was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. McKeon (2-for-5, 3 RBI), Hoisington (2-for-5), Oester (2-for-5, 3 RS, RBI), Dudley (2-for-5) and Swint (2-for-5, RBI) also finished with a multi-hit effort against three CCU hurlers.
McCully (3-0) was credited with the win in two innings of relief. He struck out four and gave up three hits and one run.
Baldridge had three hits to pace the victors, while David Anderson and Iglesias drove in three runs apiece.
Toledo will face Long Island on Saturday at 6:30 p.m., while host Coastal Carolina plays MAC member Ball State at 3:00 p.m., in the Springmaid Beach Resort Tournament presented by Myrtle Beach Hyundai Isuzu.
