FORT MYERS, FL – Freshman Brittany Hensler scored her first collegiate goal and sophomore goalkeeper Andrea Plewes stopped four shots to lead Toledo to a 1-0 victory against Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday afternoon. The non-conference tilt took place at the FGCU Soccer Complex. With the victory, the Rockets improve to 3-2-1 on the season.

The host Eagles were presented with the match’s first scoring opportunity when Lindsay Haw had a look in the middle of the UT goal box. Fortunately for the Rockets, their defense tightened up and denied the host team to get the shot off.

As the opening stanza continued, the lone goal of the match came at 32:33 following a Toledo corner kick. UT’s Hensler perfectly placed a shot off a rebound of the corner kick past FGCU goalie Emily Barrett for the game winner. Barrett suffered an injury on the play and was carted of the field after a 40 minute delay.

In the second half, FGCU kept the pressure on Toledo and had its best chance to tally the equalizer at 84:46. Amber McCall broke through the UT defense and had a good look at the goal, but her shot went wide of the mark and preserved the victory for the Midnight Blue and Gold.

Toledo finished the match with six shots, including a team-high two shots by sophomore Ali Leak.

The Rockets are back in action on Friday, Sept. 21 at IPFW. The opening whistle is slated for 7:00 p.m.
