Toledo Posts Outstanding Results in Classroom in 2012 Spring Semester
TOLEDO, OH - Toledo produced yet another outstanding performance in the classroom with a 3.622 cumulative GPA in the recently completed Spring 2012 semester, second-best among UT's sports programs. The Rockets have posted team grade-point averages above 3.0 in each of the 23 grading periods under two-time reigning Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year Brad Evans.
Twenty-three Rockets tallied a 3.0 GPA or higher led by senior Kristen Lynn, senior Alyssa Niese, junior Megan Blake, junior Blair Sorg and freshman Heather Kravitz with perfect 4.0 marks. Niese recently graduated wih an umblemished 4.0 GPA and was honored as the Valedictorian in the College of Business & Innovation.
In addition to these five student-athletes, 14 others (senior Danielle Case, senior Jaimie Morsillo, senior Ana Reynolds, junior Natalia Gaitan, junior Rachael Kravitz, junior Kristen Mattei, sophomore Nicole Gyurgyik, sophomore Rachel MacLeod, sophomore Ashley Ross, sophomore Emily Tustin, redshirt freshman Kelsey Borowitz, redshirt freshman Molly Cantwell, freshman Brooke Lawler, freshman Sarah Seig) earned a spot on the University's Dean's List (3.5 GPA or higher). Junior Danielle Leblang, freshman Kirsten Catloth, freshman Alexis Tice and freshman Meghan Topolewski also registered a 3.0 GPA or higher.
The women's soccer program's performance was a part of the athletic department's successful spring semester which saw UT student-athletes earn a record GPA of 3.266, shattering the previous high mark of 3.167 set in the fall of 2011. It was the fourth time in the last five semesters that UT student-athletes have broken the GPA record but none of the previous increases were as dramatic as last semester.
The 3.266 GPA also marked the seventh consecutive semester that UT student-athletes have earned a combined GPA of 3.1 or higher, and the 12th time in the last 14 semesters above a 3.0. Additionally, 14 of UT's 15 sport programs had team GPAs of 3.0 or above, and every program had a team GPA of at least 2.9. It was the first time in school history that 14 varsity sports registered a team GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Individually, 26 student-athletes earned perfect 4.0 GPAs, including Lynn, Niese, Blake, Sorg and H. Kravitz, while nearly 41 percent (133 of 327) earned a spot on the Dean's List by garnering at least a 3.50 GPA. Additionally, a record 70.9 percent of UT student-athletes achieved a 3.0 grade point average or better for the 2012 spring semester, the 17th consecutive semester in which at least half of Rocket student-athletes earned a 3.0+ GPA.
Women's volleyball had the highest team GPA for the second consecutive semester at 3.641, just beating out women's soccer. Men's tennis had the highest GPA for a men's team with 3.446.
