TOLEDO, OH – Michelle Chewens has been hired as an assistant coach for the University of Toledo cross country and track & field teams, first-year head coach Linh Nguyen announced today.

“I'm really excited to add Michelle to the staff,” Nguyen said. “I've known her for about seven years as an athlete and then as an assistant on my staff at UNCG. She's a great young coach and I think the Toledo program will benefit from her addition. Michelle knows me well and how I like things done, so that level of comfort will certainly help ease the transition for each of us. She'll definitely hit the ground running in all aspects and I'm happy to have the chance to continue working with her.”

Chewens spent the last two seasons on Nguyen's coaching staff at the University of North Carolina Greensboro as both an assistant coach and volunteer assistant coach. She worked with middle-distance and distance runners on the cross country and track & field teams. Chewens also was a volunteer assistant track and field coach during the 2010-11 season with the American Hebrew Academy in Greensboro.

Chewens was part of a coaching staff at UNCG that saw three runner-up finishes at the NCAA Outdoor Track Championships and seven individual SoCon champions from 2010-2012. She also coached one cross country All-American, one indoor track All-American and three outdoor track All-Americans.

As a student-athlete, Chewens was a four-time letterwinner in both cross country and track, earning Academic All-SoCon honors all four years, and was a part of UNCG's first SoCon Championship in 2011.

Chewens graduated from UNCG in August 2011 with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology and a concentration in sports medicine. A native of Cornwall-On-Hudson, N.Y., she is the daughter of Robert and Lucy Chewens, and has one sister, Nicole.
