Cory Mee Biography

Release: 08/23/2007

Cory Mee enters his 10th season as the head baseball coach at the University of Toledo. A veteran of 20 years of collegiate coaching, Mee and his staff have steadily improved the Toledo baseball program to where it is an annual contender for a Mid-American Conference championship.

Development is where Mee has made his mark as a college coach. As an assistant coach at both Notre Dame and Michigan State, Mee built a reputation as an outstanding instructor and teacher of the fundamentals of the game. Under his tutelage, almost 60 players have developed into professionals. It is not surprising then, that his focus at Toledo is on the development of each individual player in his program.

Last spring, Toledo's player development came to fruition as the Midnight Blue & Gold captured its first MAC West Division title in school history. The Rockets also qualified for the MAC Tournament for a school-record fourth-consecutive season. UT has now finished in the top two in the division on three occasions in the last four seasons under Mee.

Individually, 15 Rockets have earned All-MAC honors on 20 occasions. In addition, a trio of Toledo players have garnered All-Mideast Region accolades.

Off the field, the Rockets have been equally as successful in the classroom under Mee, posting team grade-point averages above 3.0 in 15 of the last 19 semesters. In his tenure, a total of 15 Toledo players have been selected Academic All-MAC on 22 occasions. In addition, five Toledo players have received first-team all-district recognition and Scott Boley earned a spot on the second team of the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Baseball Team.

Mee has also set new expectations for his program by upgrading the schedule. In his nine years, the Rockets' non-conference slate has included schools from the Southeastern Conference (SEC), Big East, Big Ten, Big 12 and Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) to name a few.

Mee, 43, was named the Rockets' head coach on July 10, 2003, becoming the 11th coach in the program's history.

A four-year starter at Notre Dame from 1989-92, Mee saw time at third base, catcher and second base during his Fighting Irish career. He graduated in 1992 with a bachelor's degree in biological sciences and was named first-team Academic All-America.

After graduation, he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers and played minor league baseball for the Yakima Bears in the Northwest League. In 1993, he returned to his alma mater as a volunteer assistant, helping the Fighting Irish reach the NCAA Regionals. He then spent one year at the Rochester Institute of Technology as an assistant coach before accepting a full-time coaching position at Notre Dame.

Mee and his wife Susan have two daughters, Reilly (13) and McKenna (11), and one son, Grady, (9).

Mid-American Conference Excellence
The Rockets are 53-28 (.654) in MAC regular-season games over the last three seasons, third-best win percentage during this stretch. Kent State and Central Michigan hold the top two conference marks over the last three years, compiling 63-17 (.778) and 54-26 (.675) records, respectively.

In his tenure at UT, Mee has advanced the Rockets to the MAC Tournament five times overall, including each of the last four seasons. Toledo has also finished in the top two in the MAC West Division in three of the last four years. The only previous time the Midnight Blue & Gold has placed second or better in the West Division was a runner-up showing in 1999.

Academic Excellence
The Rockets have been successful in the classroom as well as on the diamond under Mee. UT has posted team grade-point averages above 3.0 in 15 of the 19 semesters. This past fall, Toledo had 20 student-athletes garner a 3.0 or better, as the team carried a combined 3.233 GPA.

In his tenure, a total of 15 Toledo players have been selected Academic All-MAC on 22 occasions.

On a national scale, Toledo has received a recognition award from the NCAA for finishing among the top 10 percent of Division I schools in its sport for Academic Progress Rate (APR) in four of the last five seasons. APR is a gauge of every team's academic performance at a given point in time. Points are awarded on a semester-by-semester basis for eligibility, retention and graduation of scholarship student-athletes.

Individually, Scott Boley earned a spot on the second team of the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Baseball Team, becoming only the second member of the Rocket baseball program to earn Academic All-America honors. In addition, Shawn Hurst (2004), Jeff Cinadr (2009) and Ben Hammer (2011) were named to the first team All-District IV squad, respectively.

2012: Toledo Wins First-Ever MAC West Division Title!!!
Toledo secured its first MAC West Division title in school history in 2012. The Rockets' 19-8 (.704) MAC record equaled their best mark since the conference went to three-game series prior to the 2004 campaign. The Midnight Blue & Gold also finished 19-8 in the league during the 2010 season.

Overall in 2012, UT sported a 30-27 mark, registering its second 30-win season under coach Mee. The Rockets' 30 victories tied for sixth most in school history.

The Rockets' total of five selections were the second most in the conference, trailing Kent State's seven honorees. Corfman, Kuna and Delewski are two-time All-MAC honorees, becoming the 31st, 32nd and 33rd players in school history to garner all-league laurels on more than one occasion.

On the hill, UT tallied a stellar 3.92 ERA, third-best mark in the MAC and its lowest total since the 1984 campaign (3.53 ERA). Hamann was taken in the 16th round by the Chicago Cubs (494th overall pick), while Rassi was nabbed by the Kansas City Royals.

UT's 15 conference victories are the second most this decade and also equalled the fifth most in school history.
